White Screen Test

Fills your display with pure white so you can look at it properly. Good for finding smudges, dark dead pixels, uneven backlight brightness, and an unwanted tint. Bad at finding dust, which is the thing most people come here to do.

    Auto-brightness, night mode, True Tone. All three will change the field while you are looking at it.

    A white browser window is not the same test. Edge and corner problems live outside it.

Smudges show on white. Dust does not.

The standard advice to "use a white screen to find dust" is half wrong, and it is repeated on nearly every page like this one.

Oily fingerprints and cloth smears scatter light, so against a bright white field they read as dull grey haze. Dust is a different problem. A dust particle is brighter than a dark screen and darker than a white one, so against white it more or less disappears.

To find dust, use the black field with a lamp raked across the panel at a shallow angle. To find smears, use this one.

Your device will dim this field on you within seconds.

A full white screen is the worst case for every adaptive brightness system there is. macOS "Automatically adjust brightness", Content Adaptive Brightness Control on Windows laptop panels, and phone auto-brightness all react to it, and the drop tends to land in the first two to five seconds.

So if the field looks bright and then visibly settles darker, that is the device managing itself, not the panel failing. Turn all of it off before judging anything, uniformity especially.

On OLED, a full white field is meant to look dim.

OLED runs an Automatic Brightness Limiter that drops luminance as more of the panel lights up. A small white window can hit peak brightness. A full white field cannot, and never will. An OLED phone or TV that looks duller here than in normal use is working correctly.

A yellow-looking white is almost always software.

Before blaming the panel, rule these out:

  • Night Shift on macOS and iOS
  • Night light on Windows
  • Night mode or Eye comfort on Android
  • f.lux or any similar third-party filter
  • A monitor picture preset such as Warm, Movie, or sRGB
  • A stale or wrong ICC profile

White alone cannot clear a panel of pixel faults.

It only reveals pixels that are dark. A pixel stuck fully on white is invisible here, and a single stuck red sub-pixel shows up faintly at best. Treat a clean white pass as a first look, not a verdict, then finish on black, red, green, and blue.

Corner darkening is usually normal and usually not worth returning a monitor over.

Most LCDs are a few percent dimmer at the corners, because the diffuser cannot spread backlight perfectly to the edges. What matters is whether you can see it without hunting for it.

A gradient you only find by comparing corner against centre in a dark room is within normal manufacturing spread. A visible dark blotch, or a patch with a hard edge, is not.
