What the purple field is for

Streaming and gaming setups

A purple screen behind or beside a desk adds the colored backlight that matches a lot of streaming setups, without buying another light.

Creative photography

Purple works as a moody accent or background light for portraits and product shots.

Ambient light

At low brightness, a purple field gives a room a soft colored glow.

Mixed-color check

Purple is mostly blue and red with a little green. Compare it across screens to see how differently they mix colors.

Field notes

A screen cannot show real violet.

Violet light sits beyond blue in the spectrum, and no display has a violet sub-pixel. Every purple on a screen is a mix of red and blue light that your eye reads as purple. That is why purple can look slightly different on each screen, and why it photographs differently from a violet LED.

Questions

Why is purple popular for gaming setups?
Partly branding, with Twitch using purple as its main color, and partly because it sits well alongside RGB lighting and dark rooms.
Can I use purple light for a relaxing atmosphere?
A dim purple screen gives a soft colored glow that many people find pleasant. Keep the brightness low if you are using it in the evening.
How does purple test my monitor?
Only loosely. It is a mix of red and blue with a little green, so it shows whether two screens balance those channels differently. For actual faults, use the dead pixel test.
