Brightness to maximum, adaptive off
Auto-brightness and night filters will dim and tint the panel while you are mid-line.

Tracing means long stretches with no touch input, which is exactly what triggers a sleep.

Do not press on the screen.
This is the one way to genuinely wreck a display doing this, and it is easy to do without noticing. Pressure on an LCD displaces the liquid crystal layer and leaves bright blotches that may never recover. On OLED it can damage the emissive layer.
Rest your hand on the bezel, or on a book beside the device. A tablet lying flat in a case is a much safer working surface than one held in your hand.
A screen is dimmer than a real light box, so paper weight decides everything.
A dedicated tracing pad runs far brighter than any consumer display at full output. Standard 80 gsm copier paper and thin layout paper are comfortable. Card, watercolour paper, and anything much above 120 gsm will not transmit enough light, and turning the brightness up does not fix it.
Dropping the room light does more for contrast through the paper than anything you can change on the device.
For photography, lock white balance or the shot goes blue.
A monitor’s white point sits around 6500 K, which a camera on auto often reads as cool and over-corrects. Either lock white balance to daylight and use the neutral field, or use a warm field to bring the source closer to the rest of your lighting.
Mixing an uncorrected screen with a warm room lamp is what produces the split blue-and-orange look.
The glass reflects the room straight back at you.
A glossy panel under a ceiling light shows the light, the ceiling, and you, over the top of whatever you are trying to see through the paper. For fine detail this matters more than screen brightness does.
